Saw one, did one, taught one, now what? Procedural competency in EM residency [invited presentation]

Procedural competency is a large component of the new milestones in Emergency Medicine, with both a general approach competency and several procedure specific milestones. Residencies must have a proactive approach to assessing and documenting competency in these areas. This session will review literature defining and assessing procedural competency, and the limitations of the current definitions and training systems. In addition this interactive lecture will address proving procedural competence from both quality of care and patient safety perspectives.
Objectives:
Discuss the current state of defining/evaluating procedural competency in emergency medical education and medical education in general.
Understand how the issue of procedural competency relates to local and national initiatives on safety and quality of care.
Discuss and critique present systems for assessing procedural competency, including application of milestones within the NAS.
