How to improve poor patient health literacy Journal Article uri icon
Overview
abstract
  • The concept of health literacy has come into greater focus. Healthy People 2030, the fifth iteration of the United States鈥 Healthy People initiative, defines health literacy to include both organizational and individual roles. The World Health Organization, as part of its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, similarly defines health literacy as 鈥渞epresenting the personal knowledge and competencies that accumulate through daily activities, social interactions and across generations. Personal knowledge and competencies are mediated by the organizational structures and availability of resources that enable people to access, understand, appraise, and use information and services鈥.鈥
A January 2025 survey of the NEJM Catalyst Insights Council 鈥 made up of clinicians, clinical leaders, and executives from across the globe at organizations involved in care delivery 鈥 paints a picture of how changing views on health literacy and technological innovation present both opportunities and obstacles.
